With automotive giants Ford and VW announcing in October that they would discontinue investing in autonomous driving company Argo AI, that company is closing its doors. The company’s shutdown puts in question the future of a facility the Argo AI planned to locate at the S.C. Technology and Aviation Center in Greenville County. Argo AI announced plans for a new closed track testing facility at SCTAC back in August, but Ford President and CEO Jim Farley announced during the company’s third quarter earnings call in October that it would cease investing in the autonomous driving company. “In coordination with our shareholders, the decision has been made that Argo AI will not continue on its mission as a company,” the company says in a statement. The fate of the facility planned for SCTAC may become clearer later this year as a transition period resolves, according to SCTAC president and CEO Jody Bryson.
