Privacy experts have raised concerns about the use of facial recognition technology at several major Australian concert venues, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground where tens of thousands of people – including children – will be filing through for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour next year. Every patron at the event will have images of their face-print – known technically as biometric data – collected. According to an investigation conducted by consumer advocacy group Choice, the likelihood that every concert-goer will know this is being done is low considering the stadium’s relative lack of transparency around why and how facial recognition technology is being used. Choice’s consumer data advocate, Kate Bower, said this was of particular concern given the sensitivity of the data being gathered. In fact, biometric data is already considered sensitive data under Australian privacy legislation.
