China’s largest electric vehicle maker, BYD, has decided to abandon its agreement with Baidu to utilize its autonomous driving technology. The initial deal, announced in March 2022, was seen as a significant achievement for Baidu’s autonomous driving unit, Apollo. Baidu had touted the partnership with BYD as an indication of increasing demand for its self-driving solutions in the automotive industry. The termination of the agreement is a setback for Baidu and highlights the challenges facing the Chinese self-driving industry. Despite this setback, Baidu maintains the largest robotaxi fleet in China among autonomous driving companies.
