The two autonomous vehicle companies currently operate in a limited form and are required to have drivers onboard in certain conditions. An internal SF Fire Department report, shared with KTVU, found 55 driverless vehicle incidents in which the vehicles interfered with or impeded emergency responders so far this year. In one glaring example, a Cruise vehicle blocked police from responding to a shooting in the Mission District in June. In 2022, Cruise spent over $650,000 lobbying the same agencies on similar issues.
