Image Recognition
A surveillance expert has reassured Australians there is no need for alarm over facial recognition technology that was being rolled out across several stores. His assurance comes after Bunnings sparked backlash last month for signage informing shoppers about facial and number plate recognition technologies which may be in use. Bunnings is the latest store to adopt the technology with supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths increasing monitoring to cut down on thefts. The platform doesn't have the capability to provide facial recognition, he added, but can help provide the right alerts. Similar technologies have started to appear in major supermarkets, with facial recognition cameras being installed across the country in Woolworths and Coles self check outs.
