California regulators are set to decide today whether San Francisco should speed forward into the era of driverless cars, a controversial technology that has sharply divided the tech-friendly city. If the contentious debates over autonomous vehicles—and the general tenor of public comment in San Francisco—are any indicator, it’s going to get spicy. In the weeks leading up to today’s vote, autonomous vehicle companies have gone on the offensive with an ad campaign denigrating the abilities of human drivers and presenting self-driving cars as the path forward. Cabbies, Uber and Lyft drivers and even the Teamsters Union have all recently staged rallies against self-driving robotaxis in Downtown San Francisco. Since at least 2021, driverless Cruise and Waymo cars have circulated through San Francisco and today even ferry passengers through the city streets.
