General Motors (GM) has filed a patent application for technology that can detect when a driver is uncomfortable in autonomous driving mode. The new autonomous car is designed to anticipate situations that might tempt the driver to take back control. In order to minimize the frequency of the driver retaking control at autonomous driving levels 3 or higher, GM has developed a so-called “gazing technology”. Once the car detects this discomfort, the autonomous technology can adjust its actions to prevent the driver from taking control. However, this patent filing shows that automakers are actively exploring ways to help drivers transition to autonomous driving technology.
