GM Seeks Federal Approval for Autonomous Cruise Origin Vehicles

General Motors announced plans to release its self-driving Cruise Origin vehicles in the U.S. According to GM spokeswoman Aimee Ridella, production of the Cruise Origin could begin this year “pending government approval.” The vehicles would be built at GM Factory ZERO in Michigan. The Cruise Origin would resemble a bus with subway-like doors and autonomously transport up to six passengers. However, the NHTSA does not have a system in place to regulate autonomous vehicles, which can delay self-driving investments and advancements. The NHTSA opened a probe into Cruise vehicles’ autonomous driving systems last December after reports of injuries in rear-end crashes.
