Without radar, Teslas would be susceptible to basic perception errors if the cameras were obscured by raindrops or even bright sunlight, problems that could lead to crashes. Six years after Tesla promoted a self-driving car's flawless drive, a car using recent 'Full Self-Driving' beta software couldn't drive the route without error. “By the middle of next year, we’ll have over a million Tesla cars on the road with full self-driving hardware,” Musk told a roomful of investors. Even with radar, Teslas were less sophisticated than the lidar and radar-equipped cars of competitors. At an investor showcase this month, Musk appeared alongside more than a dozen Tesla employees onstage, touting the company’s broad array of expertise.
