The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a revised strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping, with enhanced targets to tackle harmful emissions. Adopted at the 80th meeting of the UN’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships includes an enhanced common ambition to reach net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping close to 2050, as well as a commitment to ensure near-zero GHG fuels by 2030. IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said: “The adoption of the 2023 IMO GHG strategy is a monumental development for IMO and opens a new chapter towards maritime decarbonisation.
