Pacific Island nations called for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions levy and global fuel standard after it agreed a “far from perfect” revised strategy for shipping to hit net zero emissions “by or around 2050”. At the 80th meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), Pacific Island nations were the strongest voices amongt member states calling for strict targets that keep the maritime industry in line with the Paris climate agreement. The countries, who are at acute risk of disaster if sea levels rise, believe that more is still needed to be achieved to ensure greater protection for the climate vulnerable.
