The AI Act defines that as covering most uses in predictive policing, emotion recognition and real-time facial recognition. The EU’s AI Act, however, could affect firms worldwide, just as the GDPR has affected how global tech firms operate. Some of China’s AI rules could affect how businesses operate elsewhere — although Grimmelmann says companies might amend their AI services for different markets. (Military AI isn’t in the scope of the EU’s AI Act.) It is another example of how global coordination on AI regulation seems unlikely, with different societies having starkly contrasting visions of what’s necessary.
