Facial recognition is met with widespread criticism for its potential for use in surveillance states and autocratic regimes. UK supermarkets have also been criticised for their use of facial recognition, as reported by The Telegraph. Whilst a 2023 working paper found that China was the biggest exporter of facial recognition technology around the world, whilst the US was the second largest exporter of facial recognition technology.
