Trade union recognition in the private sector has now been legislated for through an amendment to the Employment Act. The regulations provide the framework for collective bargaining and also for the union to apply to the Director of Employment if an employer refuses to grant recognition. The Minister for Industrial Relations said the new legislation marked a new area of recognition for trade unions, following a detailed consultation with the Chamber of Commerce, the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses and the relevant unions. Steven Linares said however, that most employers already accept that modern trade union practices are as advantageous to them as to employees. Trade union recognition in the private sector has been a manifesto commitment of the GSLP/Liberal Government.
