An estimated 145 million adult drivers in the United States, or 61 percent, have driven while impaired by sleepiness at least once, according to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2026 Drowsy Driving Report.

National Sleep Foundation Presents Findings in Washington The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) presented the results to policymakers, safety leaders, and researchers at its 2026 Drowsy Driving Forum, held Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

On the question of law, 62 percent of adults favor making drowsy driving illegal when it results in a serious injury or fatal crash, while 39 percent said drowsy driving should be illegal outright.

NSF states that it independently produces Drowsy Driving Prevention Week and all related official educational content.
