AAA: 968,000 Hoosiers to Travel for Memorial Day Weekend Record travel expected nationally, but higher costs slow year over year growth AAA expects nearly 45 million Americans to travel over the Memorial Day holiday, the highest total on record. However, year-over-year growth is slowing with some states seeing small declines. AAA projects 968,000 Hoosiers will travel at least 50 miles from home for Memorial Day weekend, setting a new record for the holiday including those traveling by auto and other modes. The travel period includes five days, beginning on the Thursday before Memorial Day and ending on Monday. Most Indiana travelers will take road trips, with more than 877,000 expected to drive. Nearly 52,000 will fly, a slight dip from 2025, while more than 106,000 will travel by other modes such as bus, train, or cruise. “Even as overall Memorial Day travel hits new highs nationally, air travel is slightly down in Indiana as travelers are weighing costs and may cause Hoosiers to shorten their trip or choose closer-to-home options,” said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group.
