But robots are not often, if ever, spotted on the bikeway. So where did this sign come from, and what’s its purpose? There is one clue as to where the sign came from. On the back of the sign, a sticker reads “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs.” More on that later. But the Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee, responsible for putting up the signs along the bikeway, said the sign’s origins are unknown. Betty Gau, chair of the committee, said she first noticed the sign this spring and alerted the other committee members of its existence in an email on May 25. The committee opted to keep the sign up because they found it to “be amusing and clever and harmless,” Gau said. They ask everyone using the bikeway to stay to the right, she said, so it’s “sending the right message.” “The bikeway is for everyone, there’s a variety of users from tricyclists to walkers to runners, we want everyone to be safe, even robots, they should stay to the right too,” Gau said. So what of that “Lexford Department of Robotic Affairs” sticker affixed to the back of the sign? Well, it seems in addition to the road sign, the department also has a remarkably elaborate website. With tabs for unit registration, economic impact, incident reports, signage compliance, and a contact page, the site has all the markings of an official government website.
