Aurora Innovation has launched its second-generation driverless trucks across its commercial network of 10 routes in the US Sun Belt, with the new fleet built around hardware rated to last one million miles. Manufacturing partner Roush is targeting an annual production run-rate of 1,000 trucks by end of 2026.

The Aurora Driver had completed nearly 440,000 driverless miles by the end of June 2026, following the deployment of Class 8 trucks on public roads in 2025. Route expansion has generated commercial momentum, with one customer recently stating plans to purchase 500 Aurora Driver-powered trucks.

Prior to launch, Aurora closed its Safety Case, its established threshold for public-road operations without a driver present, for the new truck and hardware. Chris Urmson, Chief Executive and co-founder of Aurora, said the second-generation platform provides the foundation to put hundreds of autonomous trucks on the road and reach more customers.

Roush is installing redundant systems and integrating the new hardware into the trucks at a dedicated production facility, having formalised an upfit process with Aurora. Urmson said the partnership would enable Aurora to meet customer demand and make freight movement safer and more efficient.
