Can DOT ‘unleash’ autonomous vehicles safely?

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Strategy for Automated Vehicles will attempt to strike the difficult balance of prioritizing safety while “unleashing” the technology on America’s roadways.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled the new national strategy on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The plan aims to reduce red tape, modernize critical regulations and enable the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles.

“It outlines specific actions that DOT will take over the next few years, while laying the groundwork for the longer-term future.”

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is in the process of modernizing regulations for commercial motor vehicles that use automated driving systems.
