According to the Can Tho City Department of Construction, the city currently has 44 urban areas, including 5 Type II urban areas and 39 Type III urban areas. According to the planning period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Can Tho City is envisioned as a core urban area deeply rooted in the riverine culture of the Mekong Delta, developing according to a green and smart city model. The goal is that by 2030, Can Tho's urban system will meet the criteria of a Type I urban area throughout the city, with 9 urban areas including: Can Tho city center, O Mon, Thot Not, Soc Trang, Vi Thanh, Nga Bay, Nga Nam, Long My, and Vinh Chau. Regarding this direction, Mr. Mai Van Tan, Director of the Department of Construction of Can Tho City, commented: This is a favorable condition for Can Tho to form a smart city model of regional significance in the Mekong Delta. However, this process also requires innovation in management thinking, increased application of science and technology, and digital transformation in all urban development tasks. Through this, the city will not only keep pace with the national urban development trends but also operate effectively in the new development phase with greater space, population size, and potential.
