Denton, Texas-based Carton Council has launched a library to help artificial intelligence (AI)-powered sorting systems more reliably recognize food and beverage cartons.

The Carton Council is building a growing library of photographs showing cartons as they appear in the recycling stream.

Computer vision and AI-based material recognition systems identify objects moving across MRF conveyor belts based on characteristics learned from large collections of images.

Carton Council says the quality and diversity of the training images can play a role in how reliably the systems recognize materials under real-world operating conditions.

“Our goal has always been to work across the recycling system to improve carton recovery,” Carton Council President Jordan Fengel says.
