Daihatsu Motor has introduced an AI-based inspection system for transmission components at its Shiga (Ryuo) Plant in Japan, developed jointly with VRAIN Solution, a manufacturer-focused AI solutions firm. The system uses image recognition to identify scratches and other defects inside machined aluminium holes to a 0.1mm tolerance, replacing a process previously dependent on skilled manual inspection.
Variation in defect type and position across machined holes had resisted earlier attempts at automation, making inspection dependent on accumulated operator expertise. Combining that shop-floor knowledge with image recognition algorithms, Daihatsu and VRAIN Solution produced a system capable of consistent accuracy without manual intervention.
The deployment forms part of Daihatsu’s company-wide digital transformation (DX) programme, conducted under the slogan “Digital Technology That Cares for People.” The approach is designed to be led from the shop floor, with the automaker running on-site training to build workers’ own capacity to implement AI tools across its manufacturing sites.
Daihatsu and VRAIN Solution have jointly filed patent applications covering the technology. The system is currently operational at the plant’s No. 1 area and is applicable to aluminium products of similar structure, with plans to expand it to other component inspection processes.
