The debate over the future of driverless vehicles in Washington is intensifying as rideshare and taxi drivers warn that robotaxis could threaten their livelihoods.

Supporters of the technology say autonomous vehicles could improve safety, bring new transportation options to the District and create jobs.

It would also impose a per-mile fee on autonomous vehicle companies, with revenue directed toward Metro and workforce development.

For drivers who rely on rideshare work, however, the central concern is whether autonomous vehicles could eventually replace their jobs.

The company has been testing vehicles with safety drivers and mapping D.C. streets for more than two years.
