Electrification Coalition released a report outlining policy and utility changes needed to scale electric truck charging infrastructure in the U.S. The report, Electrifying the Future of Freight: Strategies to Accelerate Medium- and Heavy-Duty Charging Infrastructure Deployment, examines challenges as electric truck adoption moves from pilot programs to broader deployment. Five Barriers to Deployment Based on interviews with industry stakeholders, the Electrification Coalition identified five primary barriers: - High upfront vehicle costs; - Prescriptive program design; - Grid interconnection delays; - Misaligned electricity rate structures; and - Fragmented local permitting processes. 11 Solutions to Accelerate Charging The report outlines 11 solutions aimed at addressing these barriers, including: - Targeted vehicle purchase incentives; - On-site energy resources; and - Coordinated local permitting reforms. The organization also highlighted lessons from an electric freight hub in Southern California, where coordinated planning has supported charging deployment at scale. Policy Context and Industry Impact The report is part of the Electrification Coalition’s Electrification Roadmap Series, which provides policy and implementation guidance for transportation electrification. It builds on the group’s earlier Electrification Roadmap and Fleet Electrification Roadmap, reflecting changes in the electric vehicle market. “At a time when the war in Iran is causing gas and diesel prices to skyrocket, and American businesses are once again feeling the impact at the pump, the United States must accelerate freight electrification to reduce our dependence on oil for transportation and protect our economic and national security,” said Ben Prochazka. “While the remaining technological hurdles to electric trucking are rapidly being overcome, institutional and market-based barriers continue to slow deployment,” Prochazka said. “This report examines and addresses those barriers as a coherent system, eliminating bottlenecks and unleashing the full potential of this transformative technology.”
