A Northern Virginia high school is getting what’s being described as the world’s first K-12 quantum computer.

Virginia’s largest school district partnered with the group Connected DMV and Fairfax County’s Economic Development Authority to provide high schoolers access to the computer.

Quantum computers operate using quantum physics, though existing versions are error-prone, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

However, the quantum computer is thought to be able to solve problems that would take current computers years.

The device is the size of a small refrigerator, School Board Member Kyle McDaniel said.
