From Machines to Intelligent Platforms: How software is redefining the Car ownership experience Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles CTO Sven Patuschka writes how software-defined vehicles could reshape car ownership in India. He looks at the growing role of AI, ADAS, connected systems and digital features, and why cars may continue to improve long after they leave the showroom. For more than a century, the relationship between a car and its owner was relatively straightforward. The car was perceived as a symbol of power, speed and conquest, where the thrill of acceleration and the roar of the engine defined its emotional appeal. A vehicle was defined by its mechanical engineering, performance, design and build quality. Once it left the showroom, its fundamental capabilities remained largely unchanged. It could be maintained and repaired, but the product itself was essentially fixed. That relationship is now changing. The industry is entering the era of a software-driven, connected platform. Ride, handling and perceived quality remain essential, but they are the price of entry, not the point of difference. The emergence of the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) represents a fundamental shift in how vehicles are designed, developed and experienced. In an SDV, taking delivery of the vehicle is no longer necessarily the end of product development. It can be the beginning of an ownership journey in which the vehicle continues to receive improvements, new capabilities and more personalised experiences and evolves into a companion that understands, responds, adapts and delights, not merely a machine that carries them from one place to another. This shift is particularly relevant for India. As one of the most digitally fluent societies on Earth, Indian consumers are increasingly comfortable with digital experiences and expect the same ease and personalisation from the products they use every day. The younger generations, in particular, value journeys
