A new technology has emerged that turns the interior of autonomous vehicles into an immersive virtual reality (VR) space for games and education. A Korean research team developed an in-car extended reality (XR) technology that converts the vehicle’s real motion into changes in the VR environment, reducing motion sickness while enhancing immersion. Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) Professor Seungjun Kim and his team in the School of Integrated Technology for Artificial Intelligence announced on the 18th that they have developed a 'Force Mappings' VR technology that transforms a vehicle’s physical motion into visual and spatial changes in a VR environment. The research results were presented at 'ACM CHI 2026', an international conference on human-computer interaction held in Barcelona, Spain, from April 13 to 17. Existing in-car VR systems mainly synchronized the camera viewpoint or scene movement with the vehicle’s motion. This created a discrepancy between the physical sensations felt by the body during acceleration, deceleration, and turning, and the visual information in the VR display, which in turn induced motion sickness. The research team introduced the concept of Force Mappings, which converts motion occurring during vehicle driving into changes in 'dynamic conditions' within the virtual environment. Acceleration, deceleration, turning, and road vibration of the vehicle are detected in real time using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a global positioning system (GPS), and then transformed into VR elements such as falling objects, spatial shaking, waves, and wind intensity. In comparative experiments between the conventional VR method and Force Mappings, applying Force Mappings improved immersion and situational awareness while reducing motion sickness.
