GM Canada spent this summer driving a fleet of Chevrolets, Buicks, GMCs and Cadillacs from Victoria, British Columbia, to St. John's, Newfoundland, letting the vehicles handle nearly the entire route with their hands off the wheel. The automaker says it's the first time Super Cruise, its hands-free driving system, has covered a compatible highway network from one Canadian coast to the other. That's a legitimately impressive feat of mapping and engineering. It's also not the most interesting part of the story. The interesting part is what it actually takes for a car company to earn the right to let go of the wheel across an entire country, and what riding along in exchange for that convenience actually costs you. What "Coast to Coast" Really Means Super Cruise works by combining cameras, radar, GPS and pre-scanned LiDAR maps to figure out exactly where a vehicle sits within its lane, then handling steering, braking, acceleration and lane changes on roads GM has designated "compatible." A camera aimed at the driver's face confirms attention is still on the road; look away too long, and the system slows the car to a stop and calls an OnStar advisor. None of that works on a road GM hasn't already mapped, which is why this year's headline addition is specific: new coverage in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, closing the gap that kept the system from stretching truly coast to coast.
