Golf cart, SUV destroyed in fire near Anna Maria Post Office ANNA MARIA, Fla. (WWSB) - A golf cart and an SUV were destroyed Thursday evening after both vehicles caught fire near the Anna Maria Post Office, according to West Manatee Fire Rescue. Crews were called around 5:52 p.m. to the area of 101 S. Bay Blvd. for a reported vehicle fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the golf cart and SUV fully involved in flames. Firefighters used about 400 gallons of water to put out the fire. Both vehicles were deemed a total loss. No injuries were reported to West Manatee Fire Rescue. Homeowner averts wheelchair battery fire after hearing warning sounds Crews were able to salvage personal items from one of the vehicles, including a wallet and glovebox contents, according to West Manatee Fire Rescue. Florida Power & Light was also notified to check a nearby power pole for possible heat damage. No confirmed cause has been identified. West Manatee Fire Rescue shared general golf cart fire safety reminders after the fire, including using manufacturer-approved chargers, avoiding unattended overnight charging and checking batteries, wiring and connections regularly. Fire officials also warned that damaged batteries, improper chargers, overloaded extension cords and charging in enclosed spaces can increase the risk of overheating and fire. Golf carts should also be kept away from combustible materials and not parked directly next to other vehicles, inside cluttered garages or beneath structures while charging, officials said.
