IndyCar has unveiled the first official concept renders of the IR-28, the next-generation car set to debut in the 2028 season, signaling the end of the long-standing DW12 era that began in 2012. Alongside technical details, the series highlighted a bold new objective: engineering the machine to smash iconic track records, including Arie Luyendyk’s historic 1996 pole-position performance at the Indianapolis 500. The series emphasized that while the IR-28 retains IndyCar’s signature identity, it features a sleeker, more modern design. Key improvements include redesigned front and rear wings optimized for aesthetic appeal and aerodynamic efficiency across diverse circuit layouts, as well as a weight reduction of approximately 100 lbs (45 kg) and improved overall aerodynamic balance—crafted to enhance wheel-to-wheel racing and push performance thresholds. Under the hood, the IR-28 will feature a 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6 power plant capable of delivering greater torque, horsepower, and track performance than the current specification. The internal combustion engine alone is targeted to generate around 760 hp, excluding additional boost provided by an upgraded hybrid unit featuring greater energy storage capacity and expanded deployment options. While hybrid and engine parameters had been previously teased, IndyCar’s release provided deeper clarity and formally declared an ambitious goal: breaking Luyendyk’s legendary 1996 qualifying marks, an objective directly referenced in the IR-28 official announcement. During that historic 1996 qualifying run, the Dutch driver set the fastest single lap and four-lap average speed in Indy 500 history. Luyendyk posted a blisteringly fast single-lap time of 37.895 seconds (237.498 mph / 382.216 km/h) and completed his four-lap qualifying attempt in 2:31.908, averaging 236.986 mph (381.392 km/h). For context, Álex Palou secured pole position this year with a four-lap run of 2:35.006, averaging 2:32.218 mph (373.7 km/h). If IndyCar achieves its performance targets with the IR-28, four-lap qualifying average speeds will jump
