According to Japanese media reports, the Japanese government plans to conduct commercial trials of autonomous trucks, with test routes covering not only expressways but also ordinary roads, to achieve autonomous transport between specific logistics bases. The government will determine the test routes and the enterprises participating in the field trials within fiscal year 2026. Since driving on ordinary roads requires a higher level of technical capability than on expressways, the Japanese government believes that conducting tests on ordinary roads is crucial for building a logistics network that uses autonomous trucks for long-distance transportation.
