Presumptive mayor-to-be and Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George said Thursday that it would be “irresponsible” to rush legalizing autonomous vehicles, as the D.C. Council considers that exact question.
Since May, the Council has been reviewing a bill that would allow robotaxis, such as those from Alphabet-owned Waymo, to operate in the District.
“Rushing the legalization of autonomous vehicles is irresponsible given the anticipated AI-related job displacement and disruptions that put countless workers at risk,” Lewis George posted on X from her campaign account.
Lewis George has been relatively quiet about the issue since February, when she said she didn’t think D.C. was “ready” for autonomous vehicles.
There is not a public date when the bill will next be considered before the council or Allen’s transportation committee.
