Minneapolis council targets self-driving car regulations before Waymo launch Some Minneapolis council members introduced plans Thursday for regulations on autonomous vehicles as a major self-driving car company is set to start operations in the Twin Cities. City council members introduced the proposal as Waymo prepares to launch service in Minneapolis as soon as this fall, according to city leaders. The proposed ordinance would regulate the licensing of autonomous vehicles for commercial use. In the coming months, the city will research and build a framework. With the regulations, Wonsley said a priority is protecting rideshare drivers and community members who may be affected by the service. “There are so many outstanding questions about how autonomous vehicles impact not just our workers, but also infrastructure and public transit,” Wonsley said. A set date for when Waymo will be fully operational is not yet clear. The proposal outlines the city’s early steps toward local oversight as the company moves closer to launching service.
