Originally designed by Martha Krempel for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Composer’s Cabin brings the sights and sounds of peatland landscapes into one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs. Complete with immersive planting, peatland samples and a self-playing piano, the installation encourages visitors to reflect on the relationship between nature, infrastructure and climate resilience. While the cabin highlights the importance of peatlands as one of the world’s largest terrestrial carbon stores, the conversation quickly broadens to a bigger question: what role can nature play in helping cities and critical infrastructure adapt to a changing climate? Speaking on the podcast, Sam explains how rail operators are increasingly grappling with the impacts of extreme heat, flooding and interconnected infrastructure risks. He argues that nature-based solutions must sit alongside traditional engineering approaches, pointing to examples such as balancing ponds and urban green spaces that can help manage flood risk, cool cities and support biodiversity. The discussion also explores how public spaces can become powerful platforms for climate education. With millions of passengers passing through St Pancras every year, Sam believes transport hubs have a unique opportunity to raise awareness of environmental challenges while ensuring sustainability
