The meeting was held on August 20, the day after Craig Naylor, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary in Scotland (HMICS), went public with calls for facial recognition technology to be used to monitor who is attending football matches.
Police Scotland has never deployed facial recognition technology, although it is controversially used south of the Border.
The minutes of the meeting between the Scottish Government and Police Scotland in August state: “The Cabinet Secretary invited views on HMICS's recent comments regarding the potential use of Live Facial Recognition technology to help tackle football-related disorder.
“The Chief Constable noted that the technology is already used by a number of police forces elsewhere in the UK, as well as by Border Force in England and Wales.
The minutes add: “The Chief Constable … advised that work to implement the new arrangements was underway.
