By Sharath K Rao India ranks third in the world in research publications, yet only 10 of its institutions appear in the global top 250 for graduate employability. It produces more PhDs than a decade ago, but the translation of that accomplishment into industry-relevant outcomes such as products, patents and ventures remains stubbornly thin. This is not merely a funding or curriculum problem. At its root, it is an architecture problem. Indian universities were designed for a different era and continue to run on that legacy model in a world that has moved on. The transition from a teaching institution to an innovation and research ecosystem is the least honestly discussed challenge in Indian higher education today. NEP 2020 has set the intent. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation, backed by a Rs 50,000-crore hybrid funding model, is building financial infrastructure. But intent and funding do not make an ecosystem. The campus itself, through its physical and digital environment, plays a vital role in enabling learning, collaboration and innovation. This is why a smart campus is becoming a strategic necessity rather than just a technology aspiration. A campus operating like a smart city deploys AI, integrated data systems and digital infrastructure not to replace human judgment but to remove the friction that wastes it. When a university hospital shares anonymised patient data with an engineering school modelling predictive diagnostics, and both work alongside a data science cohort in real time, that is convergence. The spatial and digital design of a campus either enables such collaboration or prevents it. Most campuses, built around siloed departments, prevent it. The world’s leading research universities are redesigning infrastructure to encourage disciplinary collisions. Stanford’s CoDa building co-locates computer scientists, engineers, and biologists.
