Researchers Remotely Accessed a BYD Pickup

(TestMiles) – A controlled test of a BYD Shark 6 raises urgent questions about who can enter a connected vehicle, hear its occupants and operate its systems.

Australian broadcaster ABC’s Four Corners gave a BYD Shark 6 plug-in-hybrid pickup to Fortify Labs for a two-week cybersecurity examination, according to a published account of the investigation.

This was a supervised security test, not evidence of a widespread criminal attack on BYD owners.

What the researchers say they controlled Modern vehicles routinely connect to cellular networks, phone applications, cloud services and manufacturers’ servers.

BYD does not currently sell passenger vehicles in the United States, so American Shark owners are not the immediate audience for this warning.
