Rivian R2 Is Cleaner, R3 Will Be Cheaper and R4 will be Cheapest

Rivian R2 Hits a 2030 Emissions Target Early Rivian has spent years promising that its vehicles would get dramatically cleaner over time, but the company rarely put hard numbers behind that promise until now.

The headline finding is that the R2 Performance with Launch Package has already met a target Rivian did not expect to hit until the end of the decade.

Rivian says the R2 assessment is the first automotive lifecycle analysis structured under the SAE J3341 disclosure standard for carbon footprint reporting.

So the widely cited “$45,000 R2” is not yet a car anyone can buy, and Scaringe’s comment that the R3 will land “materially lower” than the R2 is a comparison to a floor that hasn’t been reached yet.

That shift in leverage, more than any single engineering breakthrough, is what he credited with making a cheaper R3 and R4 plausible.
