The Saskatchewan government is investing in advanced computing technology at the University of Saskatchewan, aiming to position the province at the forefront of quantum research and innovation. Innovation Saskatchewan announced $400,000 in funding to support the acquisition and installation of a quantum computer at the university, the first of its kind to be owned and operated by a Canadian university. The system, designed by Rigetti Computing, will provide researchers with continuous on-site access for experimentation, testing and training. It will be housed within the university’s Centre for Quantum Topology and Its Applications. Officials say the technology will allow scientists to perform complex calculations far more quickly than traditional computers, with applications across sectors including agriculture, health sciences, energy and mining. The province says the investment will help accelerate research timelines, reduce reliance on out-of-province systems and support collaboration between institutions. Current projects include work with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization to improve vaccine development using quantum modelling. University of Saskatchewan president Vince Bruni-Bossio said the initiative strengthens the institution’s position in global quantum research and will support future advancements across multiple disciplines. The provincial funding is being matched by $1.93 million from Prairies Economic Development Canada, bringing total support for the project to more than $2.3 million. The system is expected to serve as a foundation for a future quantum research centre, while also helping train students and attract new industry partnerships to Saskatchewan.
