(KSLA) - SporTran Transit is set to unveil Shreveport-Bossier’s first autonomous public transit vehicle on Thursday, August 27. The unveiling will take place at Riverview Hall Theatre at 1:15 p.m. and will be open and free to the public. Guests will receive a live autonomous vehicle demonstration and interactive technology displays with opportunities to learn the ways in which autonomous mobility can expand access and connectivity across the region. Present at the event will be federal, state, and local transportation leaders, including Glenn Ledet, Jr., Louisiana Secretary of Transportation, and Seval Oz, Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation. In March 2024, the U.S Department of Transportation awarded SporTran nearly $1 million through its Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grant Program. The funding supports SporTran’s EVOLVE Initiative, which helps to develop workforce training to operate electric and autonomous transit technologies. SporTran was selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide, helping to establish it as a leader in shaping the future of transportation. “Selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide, the SMART Grant positioned SporTran among a select group of agencies, as a leading agency helping to shape the future of transportation in America,” said SporTran in a statement.
