DeSantis highlights SunTrax expansion to test flying, self-driving vehicles in Central Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis highlighted Florida's investment in the testing of electric air taxis and self-driving vehicles during an event Monday at SunTrax in Auburndale. The 775-acre research and development facility, located along the Interstate 4 corridor in Polk County, was initially built to test connected and autonomous vehicles. It has since expanded to support advanced air mobility technologies, including electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Officials expect electric air taxis to begin flight testing throughout the Central Florida aerospace region by the end of 2026. DeSantis said that SunTrax is also testing and supporting the deployment of autonomous and connected vehicles. DeSantis announced that the Florida Department of Transportation is partnering with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Polk State College to prepare students for careers in the next generation of transportation. The facility allows companies to test emerging technologies before broader deployment. Waymo, a leader in autonomous ride-hailing, is already operating in Miami and Orlando and preparing to expand into Tampa. According to state officials, research and testing at SunTrax could help ease congestion, strengthen Florida's supply chain, and provide safer and more efficient travel options for residents and visitors.
