Super Yooka-Laylee Kart can be tested, by you, right now. Provided you have a PC, Steam and time in your life before 24th July 2026.

The kart racing spin-off from the platforming series mixes SNES and Game Boy Advance-style retro graphics with modern features and progression.

Unveiled last month, once complete, it will feature eight-player split-screen, online multiplayer, and single-player campaign mode. Significant customisation is expected, while on-track, there’s a “revenge-based balancing system” for weapons and power-ups.

Key mechanics include drifting and being able to throw boost pads ahead of you.

The playtest can be accessed by the game’s Steam page from today, 17th July 2026, and includes: seven playable characters, four racer archetypes, two tracks and the ability to set times against a ghost.

As it’s billed as a time trial-focused build, no AI racing or multiplayer is possible. There’s a feedback form linked in the main game menu during the playtest period.

A release window for the Playtonic-created game is not yet known.
