Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense is moving ahead with the procurement of an AI system that detects Chinese military vessels, aircraft and other assets in satellite imagery.
The goal is to automate comparisons with past satellite images so that analysts can quickly grasp changes in military activity.
AI compares satellite images and automatically detects changes in military activity The system the ministry envisions is mainly meant to detect the movements of enemy forces and military bases in satellite images and automatically compare them with past images.
Ordinary optical satellite images rely on visible light, so they require daylight and have difficulty directly observing ground covered by clouds.
However, this is the ministry's overall vision for AI use, and it does not mean the satellite-image AI system being procured will have all of these functions.
