The Tata Sierra.EV now comes with built-in 5G connectivity, with Tata Motors integrating Tata Communications' MOVE connected-vehicle platform into its new N.IO software-defined vehicle architecture. The useful part is not simply that the Sierra.EV has a faster mobile connection. The 5G link is designed to support functions that increasingly depend on the car staying online, including faster over-the-air software updates, real-time remote diagnostics, emergency calls, remote support and in-car content streaming. Tata also says the system can support future AI-enabled applications and additional subscription packs. That makes the Sierra.EV an early example of how Tata intends to use its N.IO platform after the car has left the showroom. Connected-car functions are already common, including remote lock and unlock, vehicle tracking and smartphone-based status checks. The Sierra.EV takes the idea further by pairing an embedded 5G connection with an architecture designed to allow more of the vehicle to be updated through software. Tata Communications' MOVE platform handles the cellular connection, while N.IO is the vehicle's software-defined architecture. For owners, one immediate benefit should be quicker over-the-air updates. Instead of visiting a workshop for every software change, compatible functions can be updated remotely. Remote diagnostics are potentially more useful. Vehicle data can help identify some faults in real time, allowing support teams to understand the problem before the car reaches a service centre. Emergency calling and remote support also benefit from a connection that is built into the vehicle rather than depending on the owner's phone. The Sierra.EV already offers iRA.ev connected-car services, with Tata listing more than 70 connected functions and Advanced 5G on the SUV. The faster connection also supports entertainment.
