Telefónica, a Spanish multinational telecommunications company, and IQM Quantum Computers, a superconducting quantum computer developer, will install the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) before the end of 2026.

According to a Telefónica press release, the IQM Spark system is designed for research, education and early-stage development.

It will give universities, hospitals, research centers and startups direct access to quantum computing hardware to develop and test algorithms.

The project expands the companies’ existing collaboration, which includes the deployment of two quantum computers at the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA).

“By investing in its own quantum computer, the Community of Madrid is creating an infrastructure that will enable its researchers, students and industries to grow their capabilities over the long term,” said Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder, IQM Quantum Computers.
