Tennessee Woman Sues Fargo for $10 Million After Facial Recognition Wrongly Jails Her

A facial recognition system had flagged her in a Fargo, North Dakota bank fraud investigation.

The charges were dismissed on Dec. 24, 2025, after Lipps’s attorney proved she was in Tennessee during the thefts.

The lawsuit claims the facial recognition match was based on a photo from the suspect’s fake ID, not surveillance footage, and that Fargo police had no facial recognition policy, training, or supervision in place at the time.

Lipps’s case is now a $10 million federal lawsuit against the city and detective Lucas Heck.
