Trump, GOP leaders rally support for ICE funding plan after assassination attempt (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Republican leaders in Congress are pushing for passage of a budget blueprint to fund border and immigration enforcement agencies that fall under the Department of Homeland Security in the wake of an assassination attempt that was stopped by federal law enforcement officers at this weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “Saturday night's events were a grim reminder of the need for law enforcement,” Republican Senate Leader John Thune said in a floor speech. “And incredibly, some of the law enforcement officers who responded are working for a department that is currently completely unfunded thanks to Democrats’ refusal to negotiate on an appropriations bill.” DHS – which includes the Secret Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection, among other agencies – hasn’t been funded since February due to a standoff between Republicans and Democrats, with Democrats demanding reforms to immigration enforcement policies. “I very much hope that after this weekend's events, we can all agree that law enforcement agencies at the Department of Homeland Security, and the entire department, need to be funded as quickly as humanly possible,” Thune continued. The Senate previously approved DHS funding, except for ICE and Border Patrol, on a bipartisan basis, but that hit a dead end in the House. So, Republicans turned to a two-track plan to fund DHS by using the budget reconciliation process to fund the ICE and Border Patrol portions. Reconciliation is the same budget process Republicans used last year to pass the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill, and it’s a path for Republicans to bypass the typical 60 votes needed to pass legislation in the Senate.
