The University of Houston’s partnership with venture capital firm Plug and Play (PNP) is creating new opportunities for students and faculty to turn bold new ideas into real-world ventures. Launched in April as part of the City of Sugar Land’s Smart Cities initiative, the collaboration brings together UH’s talent and PNP’s global innovation ecosystem through entrepreneurship programs, internships, startup events, and industry engagement, connecting research with problems industry is trying to solve. The collaboration has already resulted in a few exciting events this year. Recently, the University and PNP hosted a Summer Innovation Bootcamp at UH Sugar Land, bringing together aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators and startup founders from among UH students and faculty. It was an intensive three-day training program focused on equipping participants with the knowledge to turn early-stage ideas into successful start-ups, giving them hands-on training delivered by experienced professionals. Over three days, participants worked on a full product lifecycle, from concept development to investor-style pitching, through interactive workshops and working sessions. Topics included innovation methodologies, market definition, customer discovery, sales strategy, minimum viable product (MVP) development and pitch preparation. Sessions focused on using practical tools, real-world examples and collaborative problem-solving led by entrepreneurs and industry practitioners. On the first day, the bootcamp opened with a fireside chat featuring Carolina Rio of Plug and Play and Ernesto Fonseca, COO of GeoKiln Energy Innovation. Their conversation challenged bootcamp participants to identify meaningful problems worth solving and begin thinking like founders. Workshops led by Saiyid Zafar Kamal from UH and Marcus Bandeira from Messer Americas followed, covering methodology and tools for idea generation, problem framing, customer discovery and business model development.
