Federal rules require a truck driver who has pulled over because of a problem to activate the hazard lights and place reflective warning triangles on the road within 10 minutes.
Autonomous trucks have no driver to deploy the devices.
Aurora challenged the requirement in court after federal safety regulators rejected its request for an exemption, and then appealed to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has now granted an exemption allowing them to replace roadside warning devices, including reflective triangles, with warning beacons mounted on the cab.
