Peak watering season is underway, and Kelowna is experiencing unprecedented drought conditions. The Okanagan valley has had little snow over the winter, and the City needs all residents to be efficient and responsible with water. Watering restrictions are currently in place for the following customers: - Stage 1: Customers serviced by the City Water Utility - Stage 1: Customers serviced by the Glenmore-Ellison Improvement District (GEID) - Stage 2: Customers serviced by the City, supplied by McCulloch Lake Reservoir - Stage 2: Kelowna customers serviced by the District of Lake Country water system “New restrictions announced last week are Stage 2 watering restrictions for agricultural customers supplied with non-potable water from the McCulloch Lake reservoir supply. Water levels at McCulloch are at 70 per cent of full pool and users are now required to use 20 per cent less water for agricultural purposes,” says Rod MacLean Utility Services Manager. “Without significant reduction in water use, the reservoir will empty before season end and cause water supply issues into the future.” All water customers can potentially help avoid further restrictions this summer by being conscious of water use, considering the timing of use, and promptly addressing any leaks in watering systems. Residents should adhere to their restrictions now and are asked to reduce water use as much as possible throughout the summer season. In addition to following your assigned watering days, residents can: - Water outside of peak heat to avoid evaporation – between 6 am and 10 am OR 7 pm and midnight. - Hand water using a spring-loaded nozzle, which uses less water than underground irrigation. - Collect rainwater, when possible, for watering outdoor plants and flowers Everyone must play their part to conserve water
